Information about the project:

This 4,500-square-foot Small Arms Training and Maintenance Facility was constructed to support year-round training operations in the demanding climate of Interior Alaska. The facility includes 19 indoor firing stations that open to outdoor ranges, each equipped with specialized air curtains designed to shield shooters from extreme cold temperatures and wind intrusion.

The mechanical systems feature a robust hydronic heating solution powered by oil-fired boilers, supplied by an on-site above-ground heating oil storage tank. Ventilation systems and targeted air curtain units ensure controlled thermal comfort and air quality throughout the firing line. Notably, the facility does not include domestic water or wastewater systems, minimizing utility infrastructure while maximizing operational efficiency.

The building is a steel-framed structure with non-metallic fiberglass stud framing, significantly improving the thermal performance of the building envelope in subarctic conditions. As part of the project scope, the contractor provided design services and installed seismic bracing for all mechanical systems and equipment to ensure long-term resilience and compliance with local seismic codes.
