Bethel Ayaprun Replacement School

ROLE: Mechanical Contractor
CLIENT: Lower Kuskokwim School District
PRIME CONTRACTOR: Unit Company
LOCATION: Bethel Alaska

Information about the project:

This project involved the new construction of a 53,865-square-foot educational facility serving Kindergarten through 6th grade students in Bethel, Alaska. The facility includes a full-size gymnasium, administrative spaces, and offices for the Language and Cultural Center, as well as a storage mezzanine and mechanical platform to optimize space utilization.

Site development included extensive infrastructure improvements and utility installations. Key elements include a new pump house, generator module, IT module, fuel storage tank, building utility connections, pedestrian boardwalks, crosswalks, play deck, play court, and stairway connections to the adjacent Lower Kuskokwim School District (LKSD) building.

The building’s heating is supplied by the Bethel city center district heat system. Water and sewer services are connected to existing insulated, above-ground water and pumped sewer distribution networks. Mechanical scopes of work encompassed all site utility connections, building hydronic heating, domestic water, sewer systems, and full building ventilation.

Given the region’s low seismic hazard, mechanical systems did not require seismic restraints, streamlining the design and installation process while maintaining compliance with applicable standards.
