Back when Steve was in High School a man came to his school for career day and was telling everyone about what it was like to be a Plumber. His name was Bill Slayden. Steve told himself that there was no way he was going to do that. He got out of school in 1980, and in 1983, he married, you’ll never guess, Bill Slayden’s Daughter. So, he started the Job he never was going to do. He started his Apprenticeship with Dave Stuart, a grumpy older guy, but an excellent plumber and mentor with a lot of patience. Back in the day apprentices were all about OJT, no books or test. After 4 years of apprenticeship, he became a Journeyman Plumber. Steve says the best thing that happened to him was family first. He later moved up in the plumbing world and started doing take off’s and running Jobs and was good at it. His work started with residential housing in North Pole and Fairbanks. Bill, then decided they were ready to take on the commercial and government work. They started doing jobs on Ft Wainwright, Eielson then later Greely and Clear. Steves work also took him to schools and housing in the villages of Alaska. As time went on, 41 years later, he is the Facilities Manager, and still going on, maybe not as strong as he used to be but he still has the Love and Compassion for the company, and the man that he didn’t want to work for, and now, will do any and everything he ask.

He has worked with all kinds of pipes, everything from ½” copper in town to 48” pipe in Prudhoe Bay. He has worked on everything from small jobs to multimillion-dollar contracts. Gene prides himself on staying updated on what he needs to be the best at his career.
He has three daughters, two of them are grown-ups and one of them is still a little munchkin. She keeps him on his toes and makes him laugh every day. She is his favorite thing in the world, just don’t tell the others. Gene likes to learn new things and loves accepting new challenges. Lately, he has been into fixing cars and trucks. He enjoy figuring out what’s wrong with them and making them work again. It’s like solving a puzzle, but with grease and tools.
Gene is trying to simplify his life and learn to minimize, so he can focus on what matters most: his family, his work, and his hobbies. Life is too short to waste on things that don’t bring you joy.
